A magnetic pickup in a tachometer is a device that measures the speed of a rotating object, such as an engine or motor shaft. It consists of an electromagnet that is mounted near the object being measured. The electromagnet produces a magnetic field, which the pickup detects and produces an output voltage proportional to the speed of the object. This output voltage can be used to measure and display the speed of the object, often in revolutions per minute (RPM). Magnetic pickups are often used in automotive and industrial applications, such as in tachometers, speedometers, and engine control systems.

Magnetic Pickup employs the principle of generating digital signal output (LS-TTL compatible) by change of electrical state induced by ferrous and magnetic material. This digital signal output at the rate of 60 PPR proprotional to speed is transmitted to the panel instrument over the interconnecting 3 core cable .
